In recognition of Black History Month, the Burrell College Diversity Series held a discussion on African American Health Disparities. The featured speakers for this discussion were Roddex Barlow and Dr. Ogechika Alozie. Roddex “Rodd” Barlow is the Chief Operations Officer of the Hospitals of Providence Memorial Campus. Dr. Alozie is the Chief Medical Officer of Del Sol Medical Center and the Medical Director of Sunset ID Care. Dr. Alozie also serves as a member of Governor Abbot’s infectious disease preparedness taskforce. Together they discussed the issues surrounding the African American community in healthcare, both as a patient seeking care and as a care-provider. The conversation covered topics such as how culture impacts an individual’s health choices, the role of socioeconomic status on access to healthcare, and how care-providers can improve their impact in communities of color.
